Texas Just Made Repair a Right. Here's What It Means for You in Miramar.
On September 1, Texas became the newest state where repairing your own electronics is a legal right. House Bill 2963, signed by Governor Greg Abbott in June 2025, now requires manufacturers to make repair parts, tools, and documentation available on fair and reasonable terms to device owners and to independent repair shops. It covers phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, TVs, smartwatches, and fitness trackers sold in Texas from that date forward.
Why does a Texas law matter to you in Miramar? Because manufacturers don't build a separate parts pipeline for one state. When a market the size of Texas opens up parts and manuals, every independent shop in the country gets a stronger supply chain and better documentation. Texas is also the first solidly red state to pass one, on a bipartisan vote, after years of these laws passing only in blue states. Depending on how you count, somewhere between eight and ten states now have consumer-electronics repair laws on the books. Florida isn't one of them yet.
What "independent" means at Techy Miramar
We are not tied to any manufacturer. That changes the conversation at the counter in three ways:
- We tell you the truth about the fix. If a repair isn't worth it against the value of the device, we say so. A manufacturer's "warranty repair" is very often a replacement at full price.
- We fix the part, not the whole device. A cracked screen, a swollen battery, a dead charging port, or a bad TV backlight is a part. Replacing the part keeps your data, your settings, and your money where they belong.
- We stand behind the work. Every repair carries a lifetime warranty for manufacturing defects on the installed part.
The right you already have
You don't have to wait for Tallahassee to pass a law. Under federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act), a manufacturer generally cannot void your warranty just because an independent shop worked on your device. Those "warranty void if removed" stickers have been called out by the FTC as likely illegal for years. The choice of who repairs your phone, laptop, or TV has always been yours.
Texas just wrote that choice into law. Here in South Florida, we have been living it since 2006.
Bring it in
A basic diagnostic at the counter is free. If a device needs to be opened up to diagnose, we quote that fee upfront and credit it toward the repair. Most screen and battery jobs are done the same day.
